For many of us, talking about ourselves and our startup feels tricky.
But it’s important to showcase our accomplishments whether we’re presenting, pitching, or having a meeting with our team.
Part of growing our startups is ensuring people know about the work we do and its impact.
If we struggle with this, maybe it’s because we were taught to be more humble or to deflect praise.
Or, it was because we were told to be modest and not seek the spotlight. Whatever the reason, figuring out how to advocate for ourselves (and our startup) is an important skill to learn.
That’s why I want to share with you this help tip…
Follow my A-S-C-E-N-D Structure to spark your startup magic
A – Articulate the benefit
Ask yourself – who does it benefit and why does it matter to the person you’re speaking with? Lead with that!
S – Be open about your startup story
Share briefly what steps you took to finish and accomplish your startup. This gives context and can highlight your efforts clearly.
C – Communicate using power words
Use words like “excited, happy, or proud”!
E – Enter now with the customer story
Highlight a customer testimonial. Show the A to B journey of change.
N – Name the reward for getting to B
Show the reward as an emotional trigger. How does the customer feel arriving at B? You can contrast it with the emotional state at A.
D – Dare the person you’re speaking with
Give no option but to accept. Do this by highlighting the risk of non-action.
The best part for your startup?
You can use this ASCEND structure in just a few sentences.
Remember, talking about your journey, story and customer impacts doesn’t have to be an entire conversation.
A small FYI is sometimes all you need to do.
Remember, the emotions you want others to feel. You’re offering a glimpse into how you will change the truth for your customers.
Besides, authentic feelings and solving their difficulties for them, will help them relate to you.
They will then recognize themselves in your narrative.
Then you’ll be winning and have them commit to you as their sage.
