Transform your pitch into a captivating narrative that wins hearts and investments.
Giving your startup pitch to investors is a fear for many entrepreneurs.
Even if you’re well-prepared, presenting to potential backers and remembering everything can be daunting.
Ironically, despite its nerve-wracking nature, delivering a pitch deck is one of the best actions you can take to accelerate your startup’s growth.
Why do we get the gitters when delivering our startup pitch?
Delivering a pitch deck:
- Allows you to showcase something you’re developing.
- Establishes you as an expert in your field.
- Builds visibility and keeps you top of mind with investors.
With so many great benefits, how can you feel more comfortable pitching your startup?
Here are my top 5 tips to help you get into the right mindset giving startup pitch
1. Not about perfection
Practicing your pitch out loud (not just in your head) will help you get more comfortable with the flow. Instead of memorizing every word, create an outline of bullet points. Strong pitchers never memorize their speech word-for-word. They have a general idea of what they want to say. It’s not about perfection; it’s a conversation.
2. Pay attention to your body language
It’s not what you say, it’s how the message is being conveyed. Pay attention to your body language because it can have a huge impact on how people perceive you and your speaking abilities. Relax your shoulders, use intentional hand gestures, and smile. Hint: recording yourself is the best way to evaluate your body language.
3. Know your audience
It’s not about how much you know, it’s about what your audience cares about. Focus on what they’re interested in, what drives them, and what information they need to know. What is the story you’d them to connect with. Remember, your topic can be the same, but your message should be delivered differently based on who is listening.
4. Use visuals in your startup pitch
Visuals can keep your audience engaged and excited. They’re also great for explaining a complicated concept. When you think about storytelling, consider what images you can show. If you have something tangible to hold that’ll bring a concept to life, use it!
5. Have a contingency plan
Prepare yourself with a few mental backups just in case things or situations throw you off course. For example, if you mess up or fumble, plan to say these words, “The point I’m trying to make here is…”
