Outsourcing Communications is an Awesome Hack for Businesses

Outsourcing communications used to concern me, but not anymore! I often hear from potential clients, “Our messaging might lose its authenticity, and our brand voice will deteriorate.” It’s a valid concern. No one wants their comms to go off course and forget core brand values.

Many clients share horror stories of companies struggling with outsourced communications. As you can imagine it didn’t give them much confidence. I’ll be honest here, there is much skepticism about outsourcing—more prevalent than ever.

For most businesses, maintaining control over communications is core. When was the last time we considered the benefits of outsourcing these functions? Close to never. At a recent business seminar, row upon row of speakers advocated for in-house teams. Keep everything internal!

Well, sorry to shock you, it doesn’t work like that for everyone. And at times, this can hurt your business. We are constantly reminded that internal is reliable and outsourcing is risky, which is misleading.

No need to fear outsourcing communications!

My realization that outsourcing is nothing to be afraid of and that both internal and outsourced functions can be good came to me when I saw the results with our own clients.

With any luck, these insights will make you reconsider what outsourcing communications means for your business.

1. Cost efficiency

Outsourcing communications can significantly reduce costs. When you outsource, you don’t have to worry about salaries, benefits, and other overhead costs associated with full-time employees.

For example, a client of ours in the tech industry cut their communication costs by 30% after outsourcing. Bonanza savings! They could now allocate more resources to product development and innovation.

2. Access to expertise

When you outsource, you gain access to a pool of experts who specialize in various aspects of communication. These professionals bring a wealth of experience and knowledge that can elevate your brand’s messaging.

A healthcare company we worked with saw a dramatic improvement in their public perception after outsourcing their social media management to specialists who understood the nuances of healthcare communications.

3. Focus on core competencies

Outsourcing allows you to focus on what you do best. When I think about it this is counterintuitive. Delegating communications tasks allows you to focus on your main business ops. Good communication is time-consuming and requires quality.

And most companies are not in the business of communications. In these cases, outsourcing makes a world of sense. I recently talked to a friend in e-commerce, who, after outsourcing their customer support communications made a winner. He saw a 20% increase in sales, freeing up their internal team to do what they do best – sales.

4. Scalability

All businesses grow. Along with that, your communication needs will evolve too. Outsourcing allows you to scale up or down based on demand without the hassle of hiring or laying off staff. Of course, eventually, you can get an in-house team, once your MRR is up, but before that scale by outsourcing.

I tell you, this is a godsend. A startup we advised was able to seamlessly expand its communication efforts during a major product launch, thanks to the scalability of its outsourced team.

5. Innovation and fresh perspectives

Outsourcing brings in fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. In my experience, external teams are often more attuned to the latest trends and best practices in communication.

For instance, a nonprofit organization we assisted benefited from new and creative campaign ideas that their in-house team hadn’t considered. This fresh input revitalized their outreach efforts and increased donor engagement.

Final thoughts on outsourcing communications

Outsourcing communications functions can be a strategic move that offers numerous benefits. It’s not just about cost savings; it’s about accessing expertise, focusing on core competencies, achieving scalability, and fostering innovation. By considering these advantages, you can make an informed decision that supports your business goals.
